Gloves on

Lately, I have begun to take an interest in gloves. It feels reassuring to wear gloves when I am in the public space, not least when I go shopping. And I would love to have a selection of gloves in a variety of materials and colours. Not heavy winter gloves, designed to offer protection from sub-zero temperatures and freezing winds, but light gloves to match the season. So I went ‘window shopping’ on Randers Handsker’s website and discovered that, with exceptional timing, they recently introduced antibacterial gloves.

I wrote to Rina Hansen, who took over the esteemed company in 2018: Your launch of antibacterial gloves is certainly timely. Obviously, this is not something you thought of yesterday, since in that case, they wouldn’t have been ready to launch now. What inspired you to develop this particular series, and do you see new opportunities for this type of product, given the current interest in hygiene?

RH: I had the idea for protective gloves even before I took over the company. My grandmother taught me to wear travel gloves from an early age – as she pointed out to me, gloves protect the hands and will keep you from picking your nose! During the years I lived abroad I was often puzzled by the paradox that people would wear masks but never thought twice about touching the same railings, the same poles on the train or generally moving round the public space without wearing gloves.

Randers Handsker’s classic summer styles have now been updated and relaunched in a version that uses the antibacterial Micro-Fresh® technology, which you can read more about here.

The glove making company and Rina seem to have a success on their hands.

Rina Hansen is 41 years old, married and the mother of eight-year-old twins.
She holds a design degree from TEKO in Herning, a BA in Fashion Management from London College of Fashion, an MA in Strategic Marketing from the University of Arts London and a PhD of Omnichannel Retail from the Department of Digitalization at Copenhagen Business School.
During her studies, Rina also worked in the fashion industry.

Rina wooed the former owner of Randers Handsker for 11 years before she was eventually allowed to buy the company.
Her goal is to preserve the esteemed glove maker’s craft but also to renew the trade (an ambition that the Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy supports) by making the products relevant to modern consumers.

RH: If we only focus on preservation, Randers Handsker is going to end up a working museum.

Thus, my principal role and responsibility as the owner of Randers Handsker is to take good care of the brand and to set it safely on a path where it will be relevant to the next generation too.

And your role?

RH: It’s a small company, so there are few things I’m not involved in, including everything from design and production to marketing and customer service.

So my day might start with a meeting at the bank, followed by an interview with an international fashion magazine and end in the storeroom where I sort skin for lambskin mittens that are going to be matched up, cut and sewn the following day. I also personally packed the gloves you received!

Thanks for the parcel! I photographed a one-size crocheted lady’s glove, treated with antibacterial technology as well as a one-size men’s glove, also treated with antibacterial technology and featuring touch-tech for mobile phone use.

Tak for pakken!
